Smurfit Stone (now Graphic Packaging International, Inc.) was in need of a larger space but were somewhat limited with expansion options due to railroad tracks on the west side of their property.

Smurfit Stone selected The Redmond Company for their expertise with site planning and construction to assist in adding 55,000-square feet to their existing facility. This addition doubled their plant capacity. In addition to the train track limitation on the site, an additional challenge to the site was planning for new stormwater quality code requirements.

Closing the plant for a remodel was not an option for the company. As a result, Redmond performed a live remodel under a very tight timeline. As a part of the remodel, Smurfit Stone updated and added new equipment imported from Germany. Redmond had to maintain a strict timeline and resolve issues quickly to ensure the plant would be ready in time for the equipment’s arrival.

Adding to the site challenges and tight timeline, Redmond encountered critical structural issues on the existing building. A section of the existing building was located on a sink hole in a critical structural location. Also because the company was a manufacturer, Redmond had to adhere to and ensure all clean air requirements were met.

The project concluded with a smooth and seamless transition for the company to move into their newly-expanded plant.
